What is OEE? Definition, formula and calculation

OEE — Overall Equipment Effectiveness — is manufacturing's single most-used productivity metric. Here is exactly what it means, how to calculate it, and what score you should target.

What does OEE stand for?

OEE stands for Overall Equipment Effectiveness. It expresses, in one percentage, how much of a machine's planned production time is truly productive. An OEE of 100% means making only good parts, as fast as theoretically possible, with zero downtime.

OEE was popularised through Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) in Japan and is now the standard shop-floor KPI worldwide. In France the equivalent metric is TRS (Taux de Rendement Synthétique, NF E 60-182); in Germany it is often called GAE.

What is the OEE formula?

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality.

Availability = Run Time ÷ Planned Production Time (losses: breakdowns, changeovers). Performance = (Ideal Cycle Time × Total Count) ÷ Run Time (losses: minor stops, slow cycles). Quality = Good Count ÷ Total Count (losses: scrap, rework, startup rejects).

How do you calculate OEE? A worked example

A line is planned for an 8-hour (480 min) shift. It stops 45 min (breakdown + changeover): Availability = 435 ÷ 480 = 90.6%. Ideal cycle is 1 unit/min but only 380 units come off in 435 min: Performance = 380 ÷ 435 = 87.4%. 372 of 380 units are good: Quality = 97.9%.

What is a good OEE score?

OEE vs TEEP vs OOE — what's the difference?

OEE judges performance against planned production time. TEEP (Total Effective Equipment Performance) judges it against all calendar time (24/7/365), exposing hidden capacity. OOE (Overall Operations Effectiveness) sits between the two, counting all operating time. A plant with 77% OEE can easily have 40% TEEP — that gap is expansion capacity you already own.
