From 70% to 90% OEE: is that jump realistic?

Vendor marketing sometimes implies OEE can leap from 70% to 90%. The honest answer: gains are real, that arc is rare. Here is how to read the claims.

What OEE improvement is typical with monitoring software?

Typical, well-documented gains from deploying OEE monitoring are 5–15 points in the first 12–18 months — mostly from making invisible losses visible (micro-stops, unlogged changeover overruns) and fixing the cheapest ones. Moving from 70% to 90% would mean cutting total losses by two-thirds; on a line already at 70%, the remaining losses are usually the structurally hard ones.

Why do vendors cite 70% → 90% style numbers?

Three honest reasons and one dishonest one. Honest: (1) the baseline was overstated — manual logs said 70% but instrumented reality was ~55%, so '90% of the manual figure' is really a 15-point true gain; (2) the claim covers a single constraint machine, not the plant; (3) it is a multi-year TPM programme outcome, compressed into one sentence. Dishonest: cherry-picking one best week. Ask any vendor: measured over what period, on how many machines, against what baseline method?

What determines how much OEE you can actually gain?

  • Your starting measurement honesty — plants that never measured automatically gain the most (they discover the most)
  • The dominant loss type — micro-stops and changeovers respond fast; structural speed limits and quality chemistry do not
  • Management follow-through — the software finds the losses; kaizen closes them. No dashboard improves OEE by itself
